This volcano holds the record as the second largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century that caused more than 800 lives. Records show that the nine hour eruption in June 15, 1991 ejected roughly 10 billion tons of magma and 15-30 million tons of sulfur dioxide, causing major disturbance to the stratosphere. The mix of ashes and gasses the volcano produced was felt globally, the entire planet’s temperature dropped and cooled by about 0.4 to 0.5°C.
